In this blog post, we will take a closer look at the art of glass etching and walk you through the process of how to etch glass using etching cream.

Etching Creams

Before we get started, it is essential to understand what glass etching is and how it works. Etching is a chemical process that creates a frosted or textured appearance on the surface of glass. The process involves applying an acid or abrasive substance to the glass, which will remove some of the glass surface, leaving behind a permanent decorative design. Etching cream is a popular choice for this method as it is easy to use and safe to handle.

Now that we know what glass etching is let us get into the process of etching glass using etching cream. Firstly, you will need to gather your supplies, which include etching cream, a vinyl stencil, a scraper, gloves, tape,  and a glass item to etch. You can either purchase vinyl stencils or create your design using a vinyl cutter machine.

Next, you will need to clean your glass item thoroughly to remove all grease, dust and fingerprints. (Avoid cleaners that advertise finger print resistant as they leave a film on the glass that hinders the etching process), best to use alcohol. Once the glass is clean and dry, you can then apply your stencil to the glass, taping all borders of stencil not to be etched with cream to protect it. Use a wood stick or scraper with smooth even strokes. (Rub left and right and up and down) being careful not toe dig into the stencil. Ensure that the stencil is securely attached and that there are no gaps around the edges of the stencil as the etching cream may seep through and create an unintended pattern.

Before applying the etching cream, protect your hands with gloves and wear eye protection, and ensure that you are working in a well-ventilated area. Apply at room temperature and both the cream and object are over 70F. Shake the armour etch cream thoroughly. Work in a well lighted and ventilated area near a water source. Apply a thick layer of etching cream using a scraper or a brush to completely cover the stencil eating is best not using brushstrokes. Make sure to apply a thick enough layer of the cream so that it covers the stencil and is not too thin staying within the taped area. Leave the cream on for the recommended time which is 1 minute based on armour etches tips, but there are some that say even 5-10 minutes to get great results, keep in mind that leaving the etching cream on for too long can waken the stencil and cause a blurry image instead of crisp clean lines, find what works best for your products.

After the recommended time has elapsed, rinse the etching cream off under running luke warm water, you may notice some of the stencil will be removed during this process, that is ok. Ensure that you remove all the cream residue, and then gently remove the stencil. Clean the glass item again, and your personalized etched glass is ready to use.

*Few things to keep in mind, it is not recommended for use on Pyrex, plastic or large solid ares of glass. (some have had success with newer versions of Pyrex). The armour etch cream will only work on bare, uncoated glass, any glass with a high lead count will be hard to etch.

Conclusion:
